Why Previous Results Do Not Predict Future Casino Outcomes

Seeing red appear six times in roulette can make black feel almost inevitable. Likewise, watching a slot go dozens of spins without a major payout can create the feeling that something big must be coming soon.

Roulette provides a similar casino example when the wheel is operating normally.

Suppose a double-zero American roulette wheel lands on red several times. The previous colors do not physically remove black pockets from the wheel. Each new spin begins with the same layout.

The probability of the next event therefore comes from the wheel’s structure, not from how dramatic the recent streak looks.

Why Random Number Generators Have No Memory of Your Session

Online slots and many digital casino games use Random Number Generators, commonly called RNGs.

The UK Gambling Commission requires regulated RNG outputs to be acceptably random and unpredictable. Its technical guidance specifically says the next output should not become predictable from previously generated numbers.

The next result comes from the game’s probability model rather than the emotional story created by the session.

Why Roulette Streaks Create the Gambler’s Fallacy

Imagine roulette has produced:

Red, Red, Red, Red, Red.

Many people immediately feel that black has become more likely.

This belief is known as the gambler’s fallacy: the idea that a random result that has not happened recently becomes “due.”

Wizard of Odds gives an extreme example. Even if odd numbers appeared 100 consecutive times on a fair double-zero roulette wheel, the probability of even on the next spin would still be 47.37%, not something close to 100%.

The surprising part is that the long streak itself really is unlikely.

Five reds in a row are less common than one red.

But once those five reds have already happened, they are history. The question becomes only: what is the probability of the next spin?

Those are two seperate probability questions.

Confusing them is what makes streak tracking seem more predictive than it really is.

Why Slots Do Not Become “Due” for a Win

Slots create an especially strong version of this illusion because payouts can be irregular.

Imagine watching a machine play 100 spins without producing its biggest bonus feature. It is tempting to conclude that the feature must now be closer.

For ordinary random slot machines, that is not how the process works.

The Law of Large Numbers Does Not Force the Next Result

People sometimes misunderstand the law of large numbers as a correction mechanism.

Suppose a fair coin has produced 70 heads and 30 tails. It may feel as though tails must start appearing more frequently to force the results back toward 50/50.

That is not what the law says.

OpenStax explains that as the number of trials increases, observed relative frequencies tend to move closer to theoretical probabilities. It does not say that the next individual trial becomes biased toward the underrepresented result.

The difference is subtle but important.

If you continue flipping the coin for thousands of trials, the early imbalance becomes a smaller part of the overall sample.

The coin does not need to “remember” its previous results and compensate.

Casino games work similarly.

Long-run percentages emerge through repetition. They do not require the next spin to repair the past.

This is why an occassional strange-looking streak is perfectly compatible with random mathematics.

RTP Describes the Long Run, Not the Next Spin

Return to Player, or RTP, can also create confusion.

Suppose a slot advertises 96% theoretical RTP. Some players interpret that as meaning every $100 session should eventually return roughly $96.

That is incorrect.

So if you have wagered $100 and received only $40 back, the game is not required to return another $56 shortly afterward.

Likewise, receiving $200 from the first $100 wagered does not mean the next session must lose heavily.

Your personal short sample can sit far above or below theoretical RTP.

The mathematics becomes more visible only across a much larger number of trials.

The Important Exception: Not Every Casino Event Is Independent

There is one nuance worth understanding.

Not every casino situation involves perfectly independent events.

A shuffled deck of cards is a finite set. Once a card is removed, the composition of the remaining deck changes slightly.

The UK Gambling Commission explicitly recognises this distinction: in games using a finite set of randomised outcomes, such as a deck of cards, outcomes can become more predictable as the set gets smaller.

Blackjack is therefore different from a standard RNG slot or an independent roulette spin.

Knowing which cards have already left a shoe can contain mathematical information about the cards remaining.

That does not mean a pattern such as “the dealer won five times, so the player is due” becomes valid.

The relevant information is the changing card composition, not the visual win-loss streak.
